A student has been fined after he drunkenly crashed his Mini Cooper in a stunt like the one made famous in the Italian Job film.
Alex Fiallos, a first year student at the University of Bristol, crashed the silver car which was a present given to him by his parents the day before. Fiallos, 18, a former Harrow schoolboy, had driven the four-year-old car to the campus from his parents home in Ealing, London and went out drinking with friends before returning to halls in a taxi. He told Bristol Magistrates he decided to drive the car because he had parked it in a clamping zone and wanted to move it. In a move reminiscent of the Michael Caine movie, Fiallos drove across the muddy grounds and paths at 30mph until the front tyres blew and he crashed into a steep flight of steps, wrecking the front of the car. A police helicopter, six security guards and two patrol cars were called to the scene and arrested the student. He pleaded guilty to drink driving and has been fined £115 as well as handing down a 12 month driving ban. Daniel Berman, defending, said: "In something of a youthful fit of misjudgment he decided what he considered would be a short route to park it somewhere he would not be eligible for a fine. University spokesman Barry Taylor said: "The university will take whatever action is appropriate to punish dangerous and disorderly behaviour and to safeguard people, property and reputation."
